1. Level (Type) of work: Qualifying graduate thesis/Master thesis; PhD thesis.

2. Topic: Study of rare modes of nuclear fission.

3. Work objective: Carrying out of experiments and treatment of experimental data on mass-energy and angular correlations in fission accompanied by emission of a light charged particle (ternary fission) or two particles (quaternary fission). Search for hypothetical fission modes (quinary fission, collinear ternary cluster decay).

4. Short description: Ternary fission is a special case of a standard binary fission, wherein along with the two heavy fragments (neutrons and gamma-quanta) a light charged particle is emitted (in 90% of cases it is an a-particle). The existence of a charge of this particle determines characteristic angular and energy distributions of its escape. Studies of these distributions (in particular, using trajectory calculations) give additional information on the behaviour of a fissioning system at the initial moment of formation and separation of fragments. A series of experiments on both neutron-induced fission and spontaneous fission have been carried out recently, wherein a number of effects that throw light on the mechanism of ternary fission have been revealed. Quaternary fission has been studied as well; a search for fission into three fragments of comparable mass has been conducted.

5. Basic facilities and software: Experiments and treatment of experimental data on neutron-induced fission on the setups of IREN, IBR-2, ILL (Grenoble) and on spontaneous fission are planned. Ionization chambers, semiconductor detectors and the «Mini-Fobos» setup (in cooperation with FLNR) are planned to be used. Data treatment software is based on the ROOT and PAW software packages.

6. Results: Preparation of publications and reports to conferences. Defense of Diploma and PhD theses.
